Angus: The Jazz Sensation!

After drumming since the age of 4, Angus Roberts-Carey, 16, has landed himself a roll in the Birmingham Schools’ Jazz Ensemble. The ensemble is made up of around eighteen musicians, aging between fifteen and nineteen.  After already being in the Birmingham Schools’ Concert Orchestra, he saw his next progression step to be auditioning for the BSJE. “The audition was nerve-wracking,” Angus says, “as I didn’t have a good quality CD to play with a backing track. So, I ended up playing along to a backing track that has an odd time signature and that was skipping. It was not the best of auditions, I have to say. I was surprised when I got in, as the audition went so badly.” The BSJE obviously saw the potential in Mr Roberts-Carey and wanted to see what he could achieve and bring to the ensemble.

When asked if he had any advice to give for budding drummers, he said “Try and give yourself a wide array of styles to learn and play. Being in the orchestras as well as playing funk and jazz in my school swing band has given me loads of ideas for my drumming and many techniques to use.”

Yamaha Clinic

Yamaha launch exclusive video programmes with Ash Soan and Neal Wilkinson in advance of Pocket Club Tour
Yamaha drums have announced an exclusive three part video series featuring Ash Soan and Neal Wilkinson as a preview to the up-coming 'Pocket Club' September tour dates which takes the pair of acclaimed drummers to eleven locations nationwide whilst also taking in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland
The first of the three programmes will be live on on Monday 1st August with the two subsequent episodes going live on Monday 8th and 15th of August.
The hugely entertaining, informative and often humorous episodes show Ash and Neal in conversation, discussing and demonstrating grooves, techniques and styles whilst delivering some brilliant performances as a duo.
The videos have also been produced to highlight the style and content of the forthcoming tour which sees Ash and Neal departing from the traditional 'clinic' format into a much more intimate analysis and 'back to basic' approach. Ash Soan comments, "With this video footage and indeed the tour we are aiming to bring the conversation back to what the instrument is actually about; to showcase and discuss what it's musical 'job' is . Playing riffs at a million miles an hour and demonstrating complicated techniques is not what Neal and I are about - this time round we want to inform and inspire by taking a more intimate, simple - in conversation with approach. We really believe the viewers and people coming to the events will learn more and appreciate that keeping it simple is the best strategy for getting work, and fitting in with fellow band members more effectively and creatively."
The episodes showcase Ash and Neal taking this new approach , with an emphasis on delivering knowledge that viewers can realistically take on board and demonstrating how you can be a great drummer by taking a more simplistic approach.
Between them Ash Soan and Neal Wilkinson are the drummers of choice for many of the UK's major artists including Robbie Williams, Van Morrison, Adele, Olly Murs, Cee Lo Green, James Morrison and Duffy.
